Background InformationBasal cell adhesion molecule (UniProt: P50895; also known as Auberger B antigen, B-CAM cell surface glycoprotein, F8/G253 antigen, Lutheran antigen, Lutheran blood group glycoprotein, CD239) is encoded by the BCAM (also known as LU, MSK19) gene (Gene ID: 4059) in human. BCAM is a single-pass type I membrane glycoprotein that serves as a receptor for laminin alpha-5. Epinephrine-stimulated phosphorylation of BCAM at serine 621 is shown to enhance adhesion to laminin. It is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-31), which is subsequently cleaved of to produce the mature form that contains an extracellular domain (aa 32-547), a transmembrane domain (aa 548-568), and a cytoplasmic domain (aa 569-628). It displays wide tissue distribution with highest levels expressed in the pancreas. It is closely associated with the basal layer of cells in epithelia and the endothelium of blood vessels. Its levels are up-regulated following malignant transformation in some cell types. (Ref.: Schön, M., et al. (2000). J. Invest. Dermatol. 115(6); 1047-1053).
