Background InformationThe BTLA gene product B- and T-lymphocyte attenuator, also known as cluster of differentiation 272 (CD272), is a T cell coinhibitory receptor of the immunoglobulin superfamily with structural similarity to programmed cell death 1 (PD1) and CTLA4. BTLA is reported to negatively regulate immune responses via interaction with the B7 superfamily costimulatory molecule B7-H4 as well as with tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 14 (TNFRSF14), also known as herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM). Polymorphisms in the BTLA gene have been associated with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis.
