DescriptionAnti-Macrophages/Monocytes Antibody, clone ED-1
Background InformationMonocytes are produced by the bone marrow from haematopoietic stem cell precursors called monoblasts. Monocytes circulate in the bloodstream for about one to three days and then typically move into tissues throughout the body. They consist of between 3 to 8 percent of the leukocytes in the blood. In the tissues monocytes mature into different types of macrophages at different anatomical locations.
Macrophages are a type of white blood cell derived from monocytes that engulf invading antigenic molecules, viruses, and microorganisms and then display fragments of the antigen to activate helper T cells; ultimately stimulating the production of antibodies against the antigen.

HostMouse
SpecificityRecognizes a single chain glycoprotein of 90-100 kD that is expressed on the lysomal membrane of myeloid cells. Weak cell surface expression also occurs. The antigen is expressed by the majority of tissue macrophages and weakly by peripheral blood granulocytes. Studies have shown that the antigen has many characteristics in common with macrosialin in the mouse and CD68 in the human.
Clone ED1, which recognises a CD68 like molecule in rat is an excellent marker of activated microglia. For pan microglial markers, staining both resting and activated microglia, use like CD11b (MAB1387Z and others) or iba-1 (MABN92).
