Background InformationNAD(P)H dehydrogenase [quinone] 1 (UniProt: P15559; also known as EC:1.6.5.2, Azoreductase, DT-diaphorase, DTD, Menadione reductase, NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1, Phylloquinone reductase, Quinone reductase 1, QR1, NQO1) is encoded by the NQO1 (also known as DIA4, NMOR1) gene (Gene ID: 1728) in human. NQO1 is a homodimeric FAD containing quinone reductase that catalyzes the 2-electron reduction of a broad range of quinones. It serves as a quinone reductase in connection with conjugation reactions of hydroquinons involved in detoxification pathways as well as in biosynthetic processes such as the vitamin K-dependent gamma-carboxylation of glutamate residues in prothrombin synthesis. It can accept electrons from both NADH and NADPH with equal efficiency. Its activity can be induced by oxidative stress and offers protection against redox cycling and reactive oxygen species. It also protects a wide range of proteins, including p53, from proteasomal degradation. NQO1 is shown to be expressed at higher levels in epithelial tissues, vascular endothelium, and adipocytes. It is also expressed at higher levels in many solid tumors. (Ref.: Siegel, D., et al. (2012). PLoS ONE 7(9): e44861).
