Background InformationSolute carrier family 25 member 44 (UniProt: Q8BGF9; also known as SLC25A44) is encoded by the Slc25a44 gene (Gene ID: 229517) in murine species. SCL25A44 is a multi-pass mitochondrial membrane protein with six transmembrane domains that is highly expressed in brown adipose tissue. Its expression is shown to increase during adipogenesis. Higher levels of SLC25A44 are observed following exposure to cold. It serves as a transporter for branched-chain amino acids into mitochondria that can be utilized for thermogenesis. Brown adipose fat in Slc25a44 knockout mice displays larger lipid droplets and higher levels of triglycerides. However, the depletion of Slc25a44 does not affect the mitochondrial respiration in brown adipocytes. (Ref.: Yoneshiro, T., et al. (2019). Nature. 572 (7771); 614-619.
