Background InformationT-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain-containing protein 1 (TIMD-1, TIM-1, TIM, TIM1, TIMD1), also known as Hepatitis A virus cellular receptor 1 (HAVcr-1) and Kidney injury molecule 1(KIM-1, KIM1), may play an important role in T-helper cell development and the regulation of asthma and allergic diseases. In the case of human hepatitis A virus (HHAV) infection, TIM-1 functions as a cell-surface receptor for the virus, through which the hepatitis A virus can gain entry into a cell. Additional evidence implies that it may play a role in kidney injury and repair. TIM-1 is widely expressed, with highest levels in kidney and testis. It is also expressed by activated CD4+ T-cells during the development of helper T-cells responses. Furthermore, TIM-1 is expressed on T helper 2 (Th2) cells of the immune system, and following the binding of its natural ligand TIM-4, stimulates T cell expansion and cytokine production in response to viral challenge.
