DescriptionAnti-Zic1/2
Alternate Names
  • Zinc finger protein of the cerebellum 1
Background InformationZinc finger protein ZIC 1 (UniProt: P46684; also known as Zinc finger protein of the cerebellum 1) is encoded by the Zic 1 (also known as Zic) gene (Gene ID: 22771) in murine species. Zic 1 is a member of the GLI C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family. Zic 1 is expressed in the central nervous system and in osteoblasts. A high level expression is seen in the cerebellum, while a low level expression is seen in the olfactory bulb, diencephalon, and brainstem. It acts as a transcriptional activator that is involved in neurogenesis and plays important roles in the early stage of organogenesis of the CNS, as well as during dorsal spinal cord development and maturation of the cerebellum. The C2H2-type 3, 4 and 5 zinc finger domains of Zic 1 are considered to be essential for transcription activation and for Zic 1 interaction with MyoD family inhibitor domain-containing (MDFIC) protein. Zic 1 is also shown to be involved in the spatial distribution of mossy fiber (MF) neurons within the pontine gray nucleus (PGN). It plays a role in the regulation of MF axon pathway choice and promotes MF migration towards ipsilaterally-located cerebellar territories.
