High Particle/Viscous Filtration

Certain food, beverage, or dissolution testing samples can be hard to filter. They either contain high levels of particulates, resulting in clogged filters, or are highly viscous, resulting in slow flow rates. In both cases, using 25 mm HPF Millex® filters can reduce clogging and increase throughput.

HPF Millex® Syringe Filtration

Comparison of PVDF syringe filters shows that Millex® HPF filters can filter higher volumes of particle-laden solutions than competing filters. Protein Solution: 2 mg/mL whey protein powder solution in water Comet® Cleaning Powder: 1% solution, v / v in water

HPF Millex® filters include a graduated glass fiber prefilter to remove larger particles and either a 0.20 μm or 0.45 μm membrane filter for fine filtration. This combination of membranes provides significantly greater throughput than standard filters without prefiltration media, especially when filtering particle-laden solutions. HPF Millex® filters are available in bulk for individual sample filtration and in tubes for use with automated filter-changing systems.

Sample volume: 10-100 mL
Features: Includes two different media – a graduated glass fiber prefilter and a membrane filter to provide two to four times greater throughput than syringe filters without prefilters. For manual or automated use.

Samplicity® Filtration System

Samplicity® system for hard-to-filter samplesMany chromatography samples are viscous and/or contain high levels of particulates. If manual filtration is used, these samples can require excessive manual force, greater time per sample, and lower recovery—all reducing laboratory efficiency. In contrast, the Samplicity® filtration system filters even highly viscous samples in seconds, with minimal manual force.

Sample volume: 300 µl to 2 mL
Features: Powered by vacuum, the system filters one to eight samples at a time into standard HPLC vials in seconds.

1.0 mL samples of 1% Pepto-Bismol were filtered by 15 users, either through hydrophilic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Millex® syringe filters with a 10 mL syringe, or through 0.45 µm hydrophilic PTFE Millex® Samplicity® membrane filters using the Samplicity® filtration system.
