Background InformationChorionic somatomammotropin hormone 1 (UniProt: P0DML2; also known as Choriomammotropin, Lactogen, Placental lactogen, hPL) is encoded by the CSH1 gene (Gene ID: 1442) in human. Placental lactogen is a member of the somatotropin/prolactin family that is produced by the syncytiotrophoblast of the placenta and its levels are reported to be high in the maternal circulation during mid to late pregnancy. It is produced only during pregnancy and is involved in stimulating lactation, fetal growth, and metabolism. It does not interact with significantly with growth hormone receptor, but only binds and activates prolactin receptor through zinc-induced dimerization. hPL is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-26), which is subsequently cleaved off to produce the mature form. It is first detected in maternal circulation at six weeks of gestation and its levels progressively rise until term. However, only a small amount is reported to cross placenta into the fetal circulation. Although expression of hPL and higher levels of mRNA have been reported in breast cancers, it has been argued and supported by some data, which suggests that a mechanism might exist that inhibits translation of CSH mRNA in breast cancer.
