Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany's Massachusetts-based Business Sectors Named 'Top Place to Work' by The Boston Globe
  • For second consecutive year, EMD Serono and MilliporeSigma make prestigious Massachusetts top employer list based on positive employee feedback
  • Recognition comes on heels of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany jumping in ranks of Science magazine’s global list of “Top Employers” for 2017

Burlington, Massachusetts, November 17, 2017 Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany today announced that its Massachusetts-based business sectors, EMD Serono and MilliporeSigma, have been named to The Boston Globe's annual "Top Places to Work" list for the second year in a row.

“To once again be recognized by The Boston Globe as one of the top companies in the state is a tremendous honor,” said Udit Batra, CEO of MilliporeSigma, the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. “Building a culture where colleagues can fulfill their ambitions and advance science and technology is of paramount importance to our company — as it has been throughout our nearly 350-year history.”

The Boston Globe’s “Top Places to Work” listing follows recent recognition from Science magazine, as Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany was ranked fourth among biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies worldwide – the company’s best ranking to date.

“The Boston Globe and Science employer rankings reflect the passion of our employees in working to deliver meaningful solutions for patients with difficult to treat diseases,” said Gary Zieziula, President and Managing Director, EMD Serono. “With a recent approval, a strong pipeline, and a culture of bold difference-makers, we are making progress on our mission.”

“Top Places to Work” recognizes the best places to work in the state based on internal employee surveys. Award selection is based on anonymous employee surveys conducted by The Boston Globe’s research partner, Energage (formerly Workplace Dynamics), from nearly 75,060 individuals at 334 Massachusetts organizations, covering factors such as benefits, management, and engagement.

Employers who enter to be surveyed are placed into one of four groups: small, with 50 to 99 employees; midsize, with 100 to 249 workers; large, with 250 to 999; and largest, with 1,000 or more. In total, the Massachusetts-based business sectors of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany employ approximately 2,500 team members across the area. Included in that number are roughly 100 EMD Performance Materials employees based in Haverhill, Massachusetts, who also participated in this year’s survey.
