Purospher® HPLC columns are based on high-purity, metal-free silica to ensure excellent separations with symmetrical peak shape. The silica is manufactured in a sol-gel process from tetraalkoxysilane, which results in a purity of 99.999%, and metal content of less than 5 ppm (parts per million). Hence, Purospher® columns are the optimal choice for outstanding, tailing-free separations and enhanced performance.
Since Purospher® columns are produced using ultra-high purity silica with virtually no metal contaminants, no chelate complexes are formed during chromatography.

The unique purity of Purospher® Si is clearly shown in the mobile phase system n-hepatane/dioxane. The highly sensitive metal-complexing agents, Quinizarin (1) and 2,2'-Bipyridine (2), are symmetrically eluted.
There are differences in the quality of so-called "high purity" HPLC column sorbents. The peak shape of the strong metal chelator Quinizarin is an ideal indicator of silica purity. Compared to any column in its class, Purospher® STAR RP-18 endcapped achieves the best peak shape and symmetry factor value for Quinizarin, This is thanks to its extremely low metal content of less than 5 ppm.
