      DescriptionAnti-Somatostatin-28
      Alternate Names
      • Growth hormone release-inhibiting factor
Background InformationSomatostatin (UniProt: P61278; also known as Growth hormone release-inhibiting factor) is encoded by the SST gene (Gene ID: 6750) in human. Somatostatin, a tetradecapeptide, displays highest expression in the islets of Langerhans and in the brain. It is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-24), which is subsequently cleaved off and the remaining chain can cleave into three chains: Neuronostatin (aa 31-43), Somatostatin-28 (aa 89-116), and Somatostatin-14 (aa 103-116). Somatostatin-28 is mainly produced by the intestinal enteroendocrine cells and somatostatin-14 is the predominant form present in the brain. Neuronostatin is believed to enhance low-glucose-induced glucagon release by pancreatic alpha cells. Somatostatin is shown to Inhibit the secretion of pituitary hormones, including that of growth hormone/somatotropin (GH1), PRL, ACTH, luteinizing hormone (LH) and TSH. In the intestine it exerts inhibitory effects on various gastrointestinal functions, including gastric acid secretion, gastric emptying, intestinal motility, and release of various gastrointestinal hormones. Somatostatin actions are mediated through five distinct receptor subtypes known as SST1-5 that are G-protein coupled receptors. SST2 and 5 are shown to be the main mediators of the gastrointestinal effects of somatostatin.
