Background InformationActin-related protein 2/3 complex subunit 2 (UniProt: O15144; also known as Arp2/3 complex 34 kDa subunit, p34-ARC, ARPC2) is encoded by the ARPC2 (also known as ARC34, PRO2446) gene (Gene ID: 10109) in human. ARPC2 is an evolutionarily conserved actin-binding component of the Arp2/3 complex, a multiprotein complex that mediates actin polymerization upon stimulation by nucleation-promoting factor (NPF). It holds a central structural position and helps relay both signals and conformational changes. ARPC2 also participates in promoting smooth muscle cell migration. The Arp2/3 complex is shown to mediate the formation of branched actin networks in the cytoplasm, which provides the force for cell motility. This complex also promotes actin polymerization in the nucleus, thereby regulating gene transcription. It is also involved in promoting homologous recombination repair in response to DNA damage. ARPC2 is shown to increase the proliferation and invasion in MKN-28, human gastric cancer, cells. The expression of ARPC2 has been linked with aggressiveness gastric cancer that includes large tumor size, lymph node invasion, high tumor stage, and poor prognosis. (Ref.: Zhang, J., et al. (2017). Mediators of Inflammation. 217; Article ID 5432818).
