Background InformationTriiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are key hormones secreted from the thyroid gland with a wide-range of biological effects including the metabolism of carbohydrates, fatty acids, and proteins. In addition these hormones play a vital role in the development of the central nervous and skeletal systems. The syntheses and release of T3 and T4 are regulated by Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH), which is secreted from the anterior pituitary gland. Together, these thyroid hormones play critical roles in the regulation of energy balance and mental and physical development. According to some studies, the simultaneous measurement of T3, T4 and TSH is of greater value than individual measurements, especially when monitoring disease relapse or therapeutic response.
