Target description

Islet-1 homeobox (UniProt: P61374) also known as Islet-1, is encoded by the Isl1 gene (Gene ID: 64444) in rat. Islet-1 homeobox protein is a transcription factor that plays a crucial role in the development of various tissues, including the heart, motor neurons, and sensory neurons. It is a member of the LIM-homeodomain transcription factor family and is involved in the regulation of gene expression during embryonic development. ISL1 is particularly significant in the development of the heart, where it contributes to the formation of the cardiac outflow tract and the differentiation of pacemaker and conduction cells. In addition to its role in cardiac development, ISL1 is also involved in the specification and differentiation of motor neurons and sensory neurons. Its expression is tightly regulated, and mutations in the ISL1 gene have been associated with congenital heart defects and developmental disorders.
