Aflatoxin in Peanuts – are no peanuts! (10µg/kg) |
If peanuts are subject to humidity, they could be affected by a fungus which forms the poison known as Aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a carcinogen and is known to be one of the most prominent natural poisons. Because the consument cannot see whether the peanut is affected by the fungus, a comprehensive test and reliable determination must be performed by the producer or farmer before being sold to market.
10µg/kg is the maximum value of Aflatoxins allowed in ready-to-eat nuts (e.g. pecans, peanuts, almonds).
Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 are the main toxins produced by Aspergillus flavus A. parasiticus and A. nominus. As it is carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic and immunosuppressive to most animal species, detection is extremely important to avoid serious health risks.
MilliporeSigma offers products to detect Aflatoxin B1,B2, G1 and G2. Depending on the equipment you are using, you can test either through HPLC or obtain confirmation through TLC (HPTLC).
