The development of membranes has traditionally relied on a highly experimental approach. For the next generation of membrane filters, we are using new imaging technologies and mastering advanced modeling tools to guide membrane development and to obtain unprecedented insights into filtration mechanisms. This approach has already led to innovations in membrane filter design and will accelerate the development of new membrane filters.

Featured Example: Analysis of Durapore® Membrane Structure

3D imaging using scanning electron microcopy yields detailed membrane structural data

Three-dimensional scanning electron micrograph of 0.2 µm Durapore® membrane

Importing digitized structure into a software program allows for simulations of fluid and particle transport through real porous structures. In this case, we were able to assess the porosity, pore diameter, and connectivity with respect to the distance from one face of the membrane.
