Background Information1-Cys-Peroxiredoxin is a cytosolic protein that is involved in the regulation of cellular redox potential. 1-Cys peroxiredoxin is a bifunctional enzyme with glutathione peroxidase and phospholipase A2 activities (Chen, 2000). It can reduce hydrogen peroxide, short chain fatty acids, and phospholipid hydroperoxides and is believed to play a role in phospholipid turnover as well as in the protection against oxidative injury.

      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThe protein encoded by this gene is a member of the thiol-specific antioxidant protein family. This protein is a bifunctional enzyme with two distinct active sites. It is involved in redox regulation of the cell; it can reduce H(2)O(2) and short chain organic, fatty acid, and phospholipid hydroperoxides. It may play a role in the regulation of phospholipid turnover as well as in protection against oxidative injury.

      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P30041 # Involved in redox regulation of the cell. Can reduce H(2)O(2) and short chain organic, fatty acid, and phospholipid hydroperoxides. May play a role in the regulation of phospholipid turnover as well as in protection against oxidative injury.
SIZE: 224 amino acids; 25035 Da
SUBUNIT: Homotetramer. May interact with HTR2A (By similarity). Interacts with STH.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm (By similarity). Lysosome (By similarity). Cytoplasmic vesicle (By similarity). Note=And also found in lung secretory organelles (By similarity).
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P30041 ## Belongs to the ahpC/TSA family. Rehydrin subfamily.
MISCELLANEOUS: The active site is the redox-active Cys-47 oxidized to Cys-SOH. Cys-SOH may rapidly react with a Cys-SH of the other subunit to form an intermolecular disulfide with a concomitant homodimer formation. The enzyme may be subsequently regenerated by reduction of the disulfide by thioredoxin. & Irreversibly inactivated by overoxidation of Cys-47 (to Cys-SO(3)H) upon oxidative stress.
