DescriptionPurified rabbit polyclonal antibody. Recognizes the ~16 kDa Bcl-xs protein.
BackgroundBcl-x is a bcl-2-related gene that can function as a regulator of programmed cell death (apoptosis) independent of bcl-2. Alternative splicing results in two distinct bcl-x mRNAs2. The larger mRNA gives rise to a protein product, bcl-xL, which is similar in size and predicted structure to bcl-2. Like the long form, the short form (bcl-xs), contains a putative transmembrane domain which is responsible for its mitochondrial localization. The bcl-xs protein is generated following a deletion of 63 amino acids from the long form by the usage of a different 5' splice site in the first coding exon. The segment deleted corresponds to the region of highest homology among bcl-2 proteins derived from multiple species5. bcl-xs lacks the conserved BH1 and BH2 domains which are present in most members of the bcl-2 gene family. Studies have shown that bcl-xs can form heterodimers with bcl-2 and does so via codons 24-78. Tissue expression of bcl-xs is different from that seen for the long form of the protein, as is the regulation of the gene expression. bcl-xs appears to be critical in the development of the vertebrate immune system playing a central role in the establishment of the T cell compartment.
