Impact of Water

When working with titrators, water is used for the preparation of the standard solution (titrant), sample preparation/dilution, instrument component rinsing (for example, if the instrument includes an electrode), and glassware rinsing.

Water used in titration experiments should not contain impurities that could interfere with the results of the experiment. Contaminants could react with the solutions and change analysis results. For example, in the determination of chloride concentration by titration, bromide, cyanide and iodide ions interefere directly and are titrated as chloride. Also, high levels of iron will mask the end point, and orthophosphate will cause precipitation.
